Supporting the Red Cross

Tuesday, May 14, 2019

The American Red Cross Serving Greater Iowa would like to thank everyone in the Iowa Great Lakes Region who donated to the Good Neighbor Fund this year.

The American Red Cross has had a presence in Iowa since 1916, focusing on disaster relief, health and safety preparedness, blood service, international service and supporting the armed forces. Last fiscal year, the American Red Cross assisted more than 865 families in Iowa with food, shelter and comfort that were impacted by disasters such as home fires, floods and tornadoes. Additionally, in the Iowa Region, we installed over 2,460 smoke alarms, provided health and safety courses to 48,573 community members and provided services to nearly 1,400 military members and their families.

None of this would be possible without the dedication of volunteers which make up 90 percent of the American Red Cross workforce. In the U.S., volunteers respond to an average of more than 62,000 disasters throughout the year including home and apartment fires – the most common disaster Red Cross volunteers respond to.

On average, 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and for over 133 years, the Red Cross’s humanitarian work has earned it high regard among Americans. Today, the Red Cross remains one of the most recognized and trusted non-profit organizations in the country.

Your support enables the Red Cross to continue to provide help for people who have lost everything in a disaster, find temporary housing and meet their most pressing immediate needs. All this is possible because of the generosity of Iowans who appreciate and understand the role the Red Cross plays in the community with disaster prevention, preparedness and response.

Thank you again to all who donated this year to the Good Neighbor Fund. Your money will truly help your neighbors in the Iowa Great Lakes Region.
