Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 21, 2019, at the First Presbyterian Church of Estherville for Grace C. Soeth of Spirit Lake and formerly of Estherville. Visitation was Sunday at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Burial was at East Side Cemetery of Estherville.

Grace Carol McKay was born Dec. 21, 1925, to Edith and Ralph McKay in Estherville. She departed this life on Jan. 7, 2019, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at the age of 93 years.

A 1942 graduate of Estherville High School, she was also a 1944 graduate of Estherville Junior College. She graduated from Drake University in 1946 and accepted a position as an elementary school teacher with the Pasadena City School District. One year later, she assumed a position in the Fort Dodge School District. In Fort Dodge, she met lifelong friends Laurie Van Dyke and Dorothy Fryer. While traveling to and from her parents' home in Estherville, Grace met Max Soeth whom she married at the Central Presbyterian Church in Des Moines on June 15, 1951. Their son, Mark, was born in 1954.

Over the next 30 years, Grace taught several times in the Estherville school system mostly at Lincoln and McKinley schools. After retirement, she began to visit Spirit Lake more often and in 1988 moved there permanently. In 2014, she moved to Welcov Assisted Living in Spirit Lake and, in 2016, to Trinity Elms in Clemmons, North Carolina.

She enjoyed traveling and participated in many trips sponsored by Iowa Public Television. Her travels took her throughout Europe, as well as to New England, Alaska and Mexico. She was an avid collector of china, antiques and Christmas decorations.

She enjoyed exercising with her friends at Brooks Resort and later at the Bedell YMCA. In later years, she treasured sunsets over the west shore of Spirit Lake and opened her home to others for the annual fireworks show. She had an interest in family history and sponsored the "McKay" House at the Genessee County Village Museum for a number of years.

Grace Soeth was a member of the P.E.O., Questers, the Spirit Lake Protective Association and the Estherville Retired Teachers Association. She was also a life member of the Eastern Star.

Grace Soeth was pre-deceased by her parents, Edith and Ralph McKay, her husband, Max, her brother, Jim, and sister, Ruth.

She is survived by her son, Mark and his wife Joan of Salisbury, North Carolina, and her grandchildren, Pamela Soeth of Salisbury and Kelsey Soeth of Boulder, Colorado.
