No. 12 Pioneers earn road win over Warriors
Okoboji bounced back from its second loss of the season Friday with a seven-point road victory over Sioux Center. The 12th-ranked (3A) Pioneers defeated the Warriors 51-44 in Siouxland Conference girls hoops action.
"We guarded very well for three quarters and did a great job in the fourth quarter of getting stops," Okoboji coach John Adams said. "Morgan Jensen had a huge steal and some big free throws down the stretch and Alli Harms also battled extremely hard on the defensive end during the possession when we were up one and Morgan got the steal. We got some great productivity from our bench tonight as they scored 11 points and got some big-time rebounds. We’re happy to get the win as Sioux Center has been playing extremely well in some close losses lately, and we can’t wait to get back on the court with this group on Monday."
According to Adams, the Pioneers and Warriors battled through a closely-contested opening stanza. Neither team led by more than three points, as the hosts took a 12-11 lead after one quarter.
The Pioneers began the second quarter on a 7-1 lead behind a three-pointer by Kallyn Stumbo and a layup by Magan Christopherson to take an 18-14 lead. From there, the two squads played even, as the Pioneers took a 24-20 lead into the halftime locker room.
In the second half, the Warriors went on an 8-0 run to go ahead 28-24, but the Pioneers battled back to knot the contest at 37-37 entering the final stanza.
The final frame was a defensive battle, as Sioux Center nudged ahead 44-43 with 3 minutes remaining, but the Pioneers scored the final eight points of the contest to salt away the victory. Jensen was clutch down the stretch, knocking down three crucial free throws.
Okoboji's Christopherson led all scorers with 19 points. Stumbo had eight points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Camry Jones had eight points and nine boards.
Alyssa Mulder led the Warriors with 16 points. Jacie Vander Wall had 12 and Hope Arends had 11 points for Sioux Center.
With the win, the Pioneers improved to 12-2 overall and 9-2 in the Siouxland Conference.
Okoboji returned to action Tuesday, Jan. 15, at home against Sheldon. The Pioneers will travel to Rock Valley on Friday, Jan. 18, and Orange City on Tuesday, Jan. 22 to take on MOC-Floyd Valley.
