Indians, Pioneers compete at Nighthawk Invite

Spirit Lake Park and Okoboji wrestling teams squared off with several northwest Iowa standout squads Saturday at the Nighthawk Invitational hosted by Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. The Indians, with six champions and three third-place finishers, took top team honors at the tournament, while the Pioneers had one champion and five runners-up to place fourth as a team.

Spirit Lake Park was dominant Saturday, finishing atop six of the 11 weight classes the Indians entered. The Indians placed first with 211 points, besting runner-up West Hancock by 46 points.

Jon Burnette, Kyler Dunn, Joe Waters, Isaac Dixon, Kyler Rieck and Dakoda Powell earned first-place finishes on the day. Edgar Tapia, Nate Cornwall and Keegan Bradley each placed third.

Burnette — ranked eighth in Class 2A — went 3-0 to win the 106-pound bracket.

He pinned West Lyon's Zach Severson in 30 seconds, earned a 15-2 major decision over Sioux Falls Lincoln's Michael Huscher, and pinned Akron-Westfield's Jader Briggs in 4 minutes, 33 seconds.

Dunn — ranked seventh in Class 2A — went 3-0 to win the 120-pound bracket.

He pinned BH/RV's Mauricio Rocha in 20 seconds, West Hancock's Matt Larson in 44 seconds, and Okoboji Cain Hanson in 1:01.

Waters went 3-0 to win the 126-pound bracket.

He pinned Western Christian's Skyler Mullinix in 1:16, Akron-Westfield's Aydin Dicks in 1:18, and Okoboji's Blake Abrahamson in 28 seconds.

Dixon went 3-0 to win the 138-pound bracket.

He pinned Sioux Falls Lincoln's Zach Johnston in 55 seconds, Western Christian's Isaac Visser in 1:17, and West Lyon's Johnny Perez in 3:05.

Rieck — ranked fourth in Class 2A — went 3-0 to win the 152-pound bracket.

He pinned West Lyon's Kael Blauwet in 33 seconds, Akron-Westfield's Cole Moffatt in 36 seconds, and Okoboji's Jakob Bockman in 1:21.

Powell — ranked second in Class 2A — went 3-0 to win the 220-pound bracket.

He pinned West Hancock's Ian Gobeli in 2:20, Western Christian's Bryce Van Dyken in 3:05, and West Hancock's Tanner Hagen in 1:44.

Tapia went 2-1 to place third at 138 pounds.

He earned an 11-6 decision over Okoboji's Caden LaRue, but fell to West Lyon's Johnny Perez in 3:53. Tapia bounced back to pin Western Christian's Isaac Visser in 1:57 to place third.

Cornwall went 3-1 to place third at 160 pounds.

He pinned BH/RV's Reid Vande Stroet in 32 seconds and Okoboji's Izaak Ramirez-Woodley in 38 seconds, but lost a 4-2 decision to West Hancock's Bennett Bruns. Cornwall bounced back to pin MOC-Floyd Valley's Noah Fleming in 1:16 to place third.

Bradley went 3-1 to place third at 170 pounds.

He pinned Okoboji's Austin Noble in 35 seconds and MOC-Floyd Valley's Caleb Harvey in 1:58, but lost a 9-1 major decision to third-ranked (1A) Tristan Mulder of Western Christian. Bradley bounced back to pin Sioux Falls Lincoln's Jacob Murphy in 5:27 to place third.

The Indians will travel to Spencer on Thursday, Jan. 17, before competing at the Herb Irgens Invitational hosted by OABCIG Friday-Saturday, Jan. 18-19, in Ida Grove.

Abrahamson leads Pioneers in Rock Valley

Two-time state qualifier Hunter Abrahamson was the Pioneers lone champion Saturday in Rock Valley.

Abrahamson went 3-0 to place first at 132 pounds.

He pinned Western Christian's Elliot Carney in 1:35, Sioux Falls Lincoln's Tae Ellenbecker in 1:47, and earned a 6-1 decision over West Lyon's Isaac Bruggeman.

Cain Hanson, Blake Abrahamson, Tyler Wittrock, Jacob Bockman and Cody Wintz earned runner-up finishes for the Pioneers.

Hanson went 2-1 at 120 pounds.

He pinned MOC-Floyd Valley's Gavin Huss in 48 seconds and West Lyon's Chase Thiessen in 3:17, but fell to Spirit Lake Park's Kyler Dunn in 1:01.

Abrahamson went 2-1 at 126 pounds.

He pinned Sioux Falls Lincoln's Hsaw Rey in 13 seconds and West Hancock's Kane Zuehl in 4 minutes, but fell to Spirit Lake Park's Joe Waters in 28 seconds.

Wittrock went 1-1 at 145 pounds.

He earned a 4-0 decision win over West Hancock's Bryer Subject, but fell to West Lyon's William Kooi in 2:38.

Bockman went 2-1 at 152 pounds.

He pinned West Hancock's Irvin Gomez in 1:20, and earned a 18-1 technical fall over West Lyon's Jackson Taylor, but fell to Spirit Lake Park's Kyler Rieck in 1:21.

Wintz went 1-1 at 182 pounds.

He earned a 4-1 decision win over Sioux Falls Lincoln's Caleb Dumke, but fell to West Hancock's Cole Kelly in 1 minute.

"We had a very good first and semifinal round, putting six kids in the finals," Okoboji coach Nate Dau said. "The last round was not the best, but we were able to secure a champ at 132 pounds with Hunter Abrahamson. We had several other great performances and we were able to rally late in a few matches for the win."

The Pioneers will travel to Orange City on Thursday, Jan. 17, before competing at the Herb Irgens Invitational hosted by OABCIG Friday-Saturday, Jan. 18-19, in Ida Grove.
