Okoboji Sailing Center's SailFest replaces Junior Olympic sailing

Tuesday, June 19, 2018

A late start to the sailing season caused the Okoboji Yacht Club to question hosting a USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival for 2018. A big regatta leaves a big hole in the schedule so now what?

The Okoboji Sailing Center (OSC) staff decided to take advantage of the day off to create an event where they could invite the public to a free open house from 9-11:30 a.m. where area youth can be an OSC student for the day and learn more about what is offered at the Sailing Center. This "learn-to-sail" program will have limited space and will provide on-land and on-water training for want-to-be sailors.

Students of the OSC will not be forgotten Friday. There will be sailing clinics, fun activities and an adventure race in the Opti, X Boat and 420 throughout the day. Students are encouraged to bring a lunch and have fun watching cool sailing videos and enjoy treats provided by the OSC. Later in the afternoon Opti students will be invited to sail in a Scavenger Hunt Adventure Race.

All students must bring a Coast Guard approved life jacket (PFD), be able to swim and sign all waivers and releases. Visit okobojisailingcenter.org for more information.
