Indians sweep Braves in Lakes Conference showdown

Spirit Lake earned a pair of Lakes Conference wins Wednesday evening, as the Indians baseball and softball teams topped Cherokee in Spirit Lake.

The baseball team scored in bunches to win 14-2 in six innings, and the 12th-ranked softball team exacted a measure of revenge with a 9-1 win over the 15th-ranked Braves.

Kelsey "The Kannen" Kannenberg was clutch both at the dish and on the mound Wednesday, leading the Indians to an eight-run win over Cherokee.

The junior allowed just one unearned run on three hits and three walks while striking out eight Cherokee batters, and went 3-3 at the dish with a pair of home runs, a double, six RBIs and two runs scored.

The win was crucial for the Indians, as they avenged their only conference loss of the season and took the lead in the Lakes Conference standings at 6-1.

The Indians scored nine runs on nine hits.

Senior Josie Fagen was 2-2 with a run scored. Sophomore Payton Ahrenstorff was 2-4 with a double and a run scored.

Senior Kailee Jenness was 1-3 with two RBIs. Freshman Karli Olsen was 1-3 with four runs scored.

Senior Maddie Richter had an RBI for the Indians, who improved to 16-5 overall.

Hawkins fans 11 in home victory

Spirit Lake senior Houston Hawkins was dominant on the mound Wednesday, striking out 11 Cherokee batters in a 12-run home victory.

Hawkins allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and five walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Junior Jack Dykema pitched 1/3 of an inning, striking out one batter.

Cherokee broke open a scoreless game with a run in the top half of the third, but the home team responded with five runs in the bottom half of the frame and pulled away with three runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth to end the night early.

The Indians scored 14 runs on just nine hits.

Hawkins was 3-4 with a double, two RBIs, three steals and two runs scored.

Senior Gavin Kramer was 1-4 with a steal and two runs scored. Senior Jac Radcliffe was 1-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Gavin DeVos was 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Junior Austin Jennings was 1-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Senior Zach Deitering was 1-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior Ben Heitritter was 1-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Senior Dillon Reynolds had two RBIs and scored two runs for the Indians, who improved to 8-4 overall on the season.
