Okoboji earns hoops sweep over Generals
The Okoboji girls and boys basketball teams earned a pair of narrow road Siouxland Conference road wins over Sibley-Ocheyedan on Tuesday, Dec. 20, as the girls topped the Generals 65-60 and the boys earned their first victory of the season by topping the hosts 78-77.
In the girls' contest, the Generals got out to a quick start, taking a 15-13 lead after one quarter of play. Okoboji responded in the following stanza, outscoring the hosts 18-12 to take a 31-27 lead into the locker room at the break.
In the second half, the Generals battled back to take a 41-40 near the end of the third, but the Pioneers scored the final four points of the stanza to take a 44-41 lead into the fourth.
There, Okoboji stretched its lead to 50-43 before Sibley-Ocheyedan cut the deficit to three at 63-60. However, Okoboji junior Grace Wintz knocked down a pair of clutch free throws to ice the contest with 5 seconds left on the clock to seal the 65-60 win.
Freshman Kallyn Stumbo notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Stumbo also had seven assists and three steals on the night.
Fellow frosh Camry Jones added 13 points and eight boards. Wintz had 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Freshman Magan Christopherson had 10 points for the Pioneers, who improved to 4-4 on the season.
Sibley-Ocheyedan was led by Britta Harberts with 19 points.
In the boys' contest, Okoboji jumped out to an early lead, outscoring the Generals 23-18 in the opening stanza. Sibley-Ocheyedan cut the deficit to three at the break, as the Generals outscored the Pioneers 22-20 to make it a 43-40 Okoboji lead at halftime.
Sibley-Ocheyedan took the lead after three quarters, outscoring the Pioneers 20-14 in the third quarter to lead 60-57 heading into the final stanza. But Okoboji responded with a 21-17 score in the fourth to seal the one-point victory and end a six-game losing streak to start the year.
Sophomore Kip Hurd led the way with 29 points, six rebounds and three assists. Senior Bryce Peter had 23 points, four boards, six assists and a steal.
Sophomore Cris Halbur had eight points, four boards and two assists. Junior Izic Brouwer had six points and four rebounds.
Both Okoboji teams will return to action Tuesday, Jan. 3 at a Siouxland Conference doubleheader hosted by George-Little Rock.
