Once again, we at Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc. in Dickinson County are overwhelmed with the success of our 21st annual Back to School program. 162 children received school supplies and a $150 clothes shopping spree at Bomgaars. A huge thank you to Lon Noble and his crew who opened their store on Sunday night, Aug. 16 so the children and their parents could shop in privacy. Lon certainly knows how to make the shopping experience run so smoothly! We also want to thank Bank Midwest and KUOO for once again shining a special spotlight on the event during Bank Midwest's customer appreciation day, and many thanks to Priority One and to those who volunteered their time and work. It takes quite an effort to make this night happen.
Realizing the effects of the current economy, I was concerned as I saw the donations not adding up to what was needed to serve all of the children who qualified. Enter Spirit Lake Noon Kiwanis. An anonymous donor gave a fun Jaguar kit car and the Kiwanis members worked all summer selling raffle tickets as well as contributing further funds. Because of their help, we were able to meet our goal!
On behalf of all of the children and their families, we give all of the thanks in the world to those who chose to donate to help these children feel special as they start the new school year.
