County approves max levy resolution for coming fiscal year

The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution Tuesday which will keep county property tax levies elevated for the coming fiscal year, with the goal of mitigating side effects of recent state legislation.

The county's general basic levy was approved at approximately $3.40 per $1,000 of valuation, whereas the rural levy was approved at approximately $1.80 per #1,000 dollars of valuation.

Proposed development could house area workers, benefit local Kiwanis Club

The Spirit Lake City Council voted unanimously last week in favor of a resolution supporting a proposed $18.8 million housing development. The resolution didn't financially commit the city to anything yet, but it's intended to aid Eagle Construction and Talon Development as the developers seek workforce tax credits for the project from the Iowa Economic Development Authority.

OHS senior selected for All-State Visual Arts Team Award

Congratulations were extended to Okoboji High School senior Maddison Lambert, who was selected for the Iowa All-State Art Visual Arts Team. With the help of her high school art teacher Laura Turner, Lambert submitted an art portfolio of eight pieces of her artwork to the state-wide competition. Her portfolio, titled "Beauty Standards," made it through the online jury and was chosen for the 2024 Iowa All-State Visual Arts Team in Class 2A.

Organizers gearing up for Birding on the Green

The Dickinson County Nature Center is collaborating with Brooks Golf to start another season of Birding on the Green from 7-9 a.m. Monday, May 6. This free program is offered to anyone — regardless of whether they've just opened a field guide or already an experienced birder. Attendees are encouraged to bring their binoculars, but the nature center will also provide a limited number to lend.

The Lakes Area Senior Center will be hosting Birds of Iowa at 2 p.m. May 6. The program will feature more than 120 birds photographed by Kim Pagel in the state of Iowa. Refreshments will be served following the presentation.

Corey McLaughlin, age 33, of Spirit Lake was charged with aggravated domestic assault at approximately 11 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 in the 200 block of 28th Street in Spirit Lake.

Volunteers help create 'chlorine producing units' for countries in need

 

Safe Water International Ministries — or SWIM — collaborated with Spirit Lake Methodist Church on Friday, April 19 in the construction of 120 chlorine producing units to be sent out to African villages in need. Members of multiple community churches banded together to create the devices — dubbed CPUs — under the guidance of SWIM board members.
