I don't know how this phone log business is going to turn out for the current impeachment process, but there's something iconically mysterious about a recipient whose only identifier is "-1" in Rudy Giuliani's phone records. Dare I say, depending on how this things plays out, -1 could land right up there with Deep Throat in the history books, but I can't say for sure.
One theory, of course, is that -1 is actually President Trump himself. It's not out of the question considering Giuliani's position as the president's attorney. Of course, knowing who spoke with who doesn't tell us what they talked about, and this could all blow over in short order. Regardless, the issue has cast something of a shadow over the presidency.
Thus, I give you my latest cartoon – simply titled -1.
I mentioned a while back I was going to try and get away from simple, flat compositions. I think I did it in this case. My original vision was to actually have the -1 be Trump's shadow, but that imagery read as if Trump was more on the verge of being proven to be the mysterious recipient of Giuliani's calls. So, as I mentioned above, I took the metaphor literally and cast a shadow over him.
I had something like a poster from the Ocean's 11 franchise in mind, and I think it landed in the neighborhood – high perspective, minimal color, central use of the color red. The issue was scale. I worked out a few sketches of Trump's face in my sketchbook before beginning. One ended up looking more like Robert Mueller ironically, so I'll save that for future reference. I was more sure of the body position I wanted, so I ended up combining the two parts of the sketch before I began. However, that left me with the difficulty of adjusting scale after I had created and rendered the figure. Thankfully, I was working off a combined layer copy of the figure, rather than the original layers, so I was able to avoid loosing resolution by using one as a place holder and then making a new copy at the correct scale.
While this one was simple, it did have it's own bumps in the road. It took around three hours divided over two days to complete.
Thanks for reading.
