"So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light." (Romans 13:12) These words are followed by warnings against behaviors that get people in the worst kind of troubles. "Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature." (Romans 13:14)
These words are further underlined by words in Ephesians 6, "Finally be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the evil day comes you will be able to stand your ground and after you have done everything to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around you waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints." (Ephesians 6:10-18)
The above words make it clear that evil was real in those days of New Testament writing as it it is today. Jails, prisons and many such facilities help protect society from the consequences of evil.
Matthew Henry has a large commentary of the Bible. On the biblical words quoted above, Matthew Henry has the following comment, "Spiritual strength and courage are very necessary for our spiritual warfare. We have no sufficient strength of our own. All our sufficient is of God."
Modern media makes the evils of the world around us evermore present, threatening and real. Whether among children and youth or adults — spiritual warfare is real.
