Theology is the study of God. There are many theological words that can be confusing and if not explained well — and in an enjoyable and relatable way — can easily be skipped over. However, like miners who strike gold under the surface, a little digging is well worth the effort.
God, who is infinite, reveals himself to us in Scripture. Through language and imagery, he is revealed in a way that we can begin to scratch the surface of; grasping who he is and how we can relate to him. One of the ways that God has revealed himself is the theological term ‘immutability.’ In short it simply means unchanging. God is immutable in his character and purposes. We trust the revealed character of God to not change.
This is a glorious truth. We can trust that God does not act out on whims or is driven by emotion. God is set in his character, and our actions toward him, or our avoidance of him, does not change his response to people. We can trust the character of God.
Hebrews 13:8 says it simply: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.
Theology brings us comfort. We can find comfort in the unchanging nature of God’s love and presence. We can find comfort in the fact that no matter the circumstances or changing nature of our world, God’s purposes are also unchanging and will be brought to fruition.
Find comfort in the theological truth of God’s unchanging character today.
