The Way Station is a new outreach ministry project of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church and will open on Sunday, Sept. 9 with Eucharist services at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., led by the Rev. Beth Preston. It will restore the Episcopal presence in Spencer.
The Way Station is located at 302 N. Grand Avenue in downtown Spencer. Following the Sept. 9 opening, it will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
On Sundays, The Way Station will host a 3 p.m. service, which is a more traditional Eucharist service and a 4:30 p.m. service, which will be more informal.
Healing prayers could be offered to individuals and groups on a walk-in or pre-arranged basis.
Assistant priest with Saint Alban's in Spirit Lake, and leader at The Way Station, Beth Preston said she hopes the ministry will appeal to those who may not yet have a church home, especially young people.
"I see this ministry as evangelistic by way of radical hospitality, thinking especially of the unchurched, but warm, friendly and welcoming to all," Preston said. "I see an inviting entry with attractive and comfortable furnishings where people can rest and be renewed, rekindled, recharged and begin to experience restoration."
The ministry will feature a used bookstore/reading room, art workshops with monthly themed projects and a sip and create space where guests can focus on art and study while consuming complimentary coffee or tea. Patrons are also invited to bring their own wine. The ministry will be a nonprofit supported by freewill donations.
"The Way Station, is kind of a play on words," Preston said. "Early Christians were called followers of the way, the way of Jesus. I think that is something that appeals to people who might be turned off by the church. I think most people agree, whatever they believe about Jesus, he was a really good guy. He is worth following."
