Happy 90th birthday to Dixon Beach seasonal resident Buddy Strub. He still plays tennis and is a very active guy. He and Marilyn Maye should compare notes and give us all a few tips.
We welcome the 24 teams here for the weekend to compete in the annual University of Okoboji Budweiser Slow Pitch Tournament taking place Saturday and Sunday in Milford. Have a great time and I hope you enjoy the Iowa Great Lakes Region between games. The games are being played on the ball diamonds west of Sunshine Foods and are free to the public all day on both Saturday and Sunday.
My friend Ed Hendrickson is celebrating his 90th birthday in style. A three-piece band featuring Glenn Henriksen will play a free concert for Ed on Aug. 20 at 5 p.m. The party/concert takes place at Bayrym Beach near Pikes Point State Park. Anyone attending the party can park at Pikes Point and a golf cart will be available to take you to the party. Ed took me for a ride in his vintage white Corvette convertible a few years back that was such fun. Both the car and Ed are classics. Happy birthday dear friend!
Calvary United Methodist Church has a hard-working volunteer who spends hours on various necessary projects at the church. Betty Naab, retired librarian, is celebrating her 85th birthday on Aug. 24. Happy birthday dear Betty and thanks for all that you do.
There is a couple living up on the north end of West Lake Okoboji who have had a major impact on the lives of many of our youth as they were growing up. Owen (Mr. P) Primavera was a science teacher at Milford High School back when my kids were growing up. They had the privilege of going on his summer science club trips to many parts of the United States. Beth Primavera always helped her husband with the trips; spending hours on buses and touring with a bunch of high schoolers each summer. I had the honor of helping chaperone one of those trips. We went to Washington, D.C. and the Worlds Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. (I think it was the summer of 1982) We camped out in tents and saw some fabulous places all planned out by Mr. P and Beth. This adventurous and dedicated couple is celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary. Congratulations to you both and I hope you enjoy many more anniversaries together! You have earned it after spending parts of your summers with a bus load of teenagers.
If you have a reunion, family party or special event coming up this summer, let me know. You can email the information to firstname.lastname@example.org or give me a call at 712-320-2850. Have a safe and enjoyable week!
