County treasurer deadlines extended once again

Tuesday, November 17, 2020

Gov. Kim Reynolds "Proclamation of Disaster Emergency" signed Tuesday, Nov. 10, continues the noncommercial driver's license expiration date suspensions through Thursday, Dec. 10. It includes the prior proclamation's extension of the time a car purchased through a dealer can be driven on the highways with temporary tags issued by a dealer.

Driver's Licenses that expired beginning Jan. 16 and during the proclamation have driving privileges extended through Dec. 10. The Dickinson County Driver's License Station is open by appointment only call for an appointment at 712-336-6277 or renew online if eligible. Some driver's licenses can be extended for six months for driving purposes online with the Department of Transportation.

REAL ID driver's license enforcement was extended by federal law until October 1, 2021.

Motor vehicles purchased from a dealer and using dealer-issued temporary tags until the vehicle can be titled and plated at the county treasurer's office can be operated on the highways of this state without registration plates for up to 90 days after the date of delivery of the vehicle to the purchaser from a dealer. Normally this must be completed by 45 days. The requirement to submit title application work to the county treasurer within 30 days remains in effect. If late, a late title penalty is charged at the county treasurer's office.

Motor vehicles renewed under the International Registration Plan handled by the state IDOT will not pay a late filing penalty if renewals are late. This affects mainly commercial truckers. The county offices do not handle these registrations.

"We are open to the public, but because of social distancing health needs we are limited to two people in the tax/motor vehicle office and two people in the Driver's License Station," Dickinson County Treasurer Kris Rowley said. "Facemasks are required for entry. We are asking people to pay taxes and motor vehicle renewals through our online website, mail, drop box or by phone, so we can save the in-office visits for our transactions that require face-to-face visits."
