The perils of Republican leadership
Tuesday, November 10, 2020
Currently, in the United States, there are 21 states led by Republican Governors and Congresses and 15 states led by Democratic Governors and Congresses. An interesting study by Lloyd Chambliss of the University of North Carolina revealed a startling statistical contrast between Republican led states and Democratic led states.
The study tracked the number of COVID 19 cases per 100,000 people in each of the two groups of states. It showed a dramatic difference in the number of cases in the states. Democratic states = 2,155 cases per 100,000, Republican states = 2,738 cases per 100,000. A difference of 583 or 27%.
When President Trump holds rallies across the country, disparaging mask wearing and social distancing, his supporters get his message: "The pandemic is under control, it will magically disappear, don't let it change your lifestyle." Here in Iowa, we have seen the disastrous results of Republican leadership. Fortunately, new leadership is on the horizon.
