Corvette Club, classic boat organizers alter 2020 plans

Tuesday, July 21, 2020

Area residents and visitors will still have a chance to see Corvettes and classic boats this weekend, but organizers do have changes in mind, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The University of Okoboji Corvette Club is altering its usual "Vettes in the Park" weekend. The cars and their proud owners will be cruising through the Arnolds Park area instead of hosting a parked display and competition near Preservation Plaza.

An open house begins the Vette weekend from 1-3:30 p.m. Friday at Sampson Corvettes in Sanborn. The address for the mask-optional event is 5820 320th St. in Sanborn.

Participants will then make their way to Spirit Lake on Friday night for a 5-8 p.m. open house at the Arlin Kiehl Toy Shed, which is located at 25280 165th St. Food and drink will be available. Masks are optional.

Festivities resume Saturday, July 25, when the cruise-in will replace the annual car show. The cruise will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and registration will not be required. The Corvette club has also waived judging, awards and clothing sales for 2020. Participants will have to sign a waiver to drive through the Arnolds Park-Queen's Court area for parking.

"We recommend mask-wearing and maintaining social distancing," the club said in its announcement flyer. "If you don't feel well or comfortable, please wait to see us in 2021."

The Jerry Dyhrkopp Iowa Great Lakes Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boats Society will have its "wooden boat" show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday followed by the boat parade. The boat society won't be having a cocktail party this year.

Participants are encouraged to let organizers know attendance plans so they can prepare accordingly. The contact number for calls or texts is 712-301-7172.

The Jerry Dyhrkopp Iowa Great Lakes Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boats Society was chartered in September 1981 as the chapter serving the Iowa Great Lakes. Saturday's show will mark the society's 40th Antique and Classic Boat Show.

"Lake Okoboji is lucky to be home to so many beautiful classic boats," the Dyhrkopp chapter said on its Facebook page.
