Iowa Rock Hall of Fame pauses usual Labor Day celebration
As the region tries to turn down the COVID-19 infection rates, the Iowa Rock 'n Roll Music Association plans to turn down the music at its biggest event of the year.
IRRMA on Wednesday, July 1, announced plans to postpone induction ceremonies for the Iowa Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2020. Pandemic pending, those inductions will now take place Memorial Day weekend — May 29-31, 2021 — instead.
"We've been thinking about this for a long time as a board and as a staff," Iowa Rock 'N Roll Music Association Executive Director Clay Norris said. "What began to happen is: We had some inductees who said they weren't comfortable coming — especially once the cases started going up in Dickinson County. A lot of them are from hotter spots and areas (for infections) anyway and were pretty-much locked in."
Norris said the safety for the hall inductees, IRRMA's staff and volunteers and Iowa Rock 'N Roll's patrons remains the top priority.
"If we have inductees who don't want to come and we have some board members who might not come, I'd bet our attendance would be way down," Norris said. "Then, it just wouldn't honor these people properly."
If the 2020 Iowa Hall of Fame Class is inducted next May, the 2021 Iowa Rock'N Roll Hall of Fame inductees would then be inducted — on schedule — over Labor Day weekend of 2021.
The Iowa Rock 'N Roll Music Association also scheduled three tribute concerts at the start of summer 2021. Norris feels the bookings will fit right in with the Class of 2020 ceremonies.
Norris also hopes the "Rock the Patio" Thursday concerts and "Live on Lake Street" performance series on Fridays will help fill the musical void for the rest of the current summer.
