Another successful blood drive

Tuesday, February 11, 2020

Spirit Lake you did it! What an amazing response to the American Red Cross blood drive on Jan. 27. I donít know if it was the new location at the Senior Center in Spirit Lake or just the generously of the citizens of this fine city, but the blood drive was a huge success. We began an hour earlier than usual, beginning at noon, and the turnout was steady all afternoon.

The people of Spirit Lake donated a total of 45 units: 35 units of whole blood and 5 power reds. We had 17 walk-ins, which is fantastic! We had only two that were scheduled who did not fulfill their appointments, and we had four deferrals.

I apologize for any wait time you had, and I appreciate those who agreed to return when it wasn't so busy. I heard the staff indicate they needed more help the next time. The staff always take the ones with appointments first and, if you have an appointment, the wait is usually less.

My thanks go out to those who so willingly helped: Carol Schultz, Carolyn Vincelli, Diane and Manny Zempel and Grace Gerdes. Thanks also to the Senior Center for their help and this was a wonderful facility to accommodate this event.

Your generosity is most appreciated by those needing transfusions in trauma situations and for on-going treatment of chronic life-threatening illnesses. The supply of blood is in urgent need, and this is one thing that cannot be manufactured.
