Good neighbors helping hockey

Tuesday, May 28, 2019

The Good Neighbor Fund has provided an opportunity for our whole community to give generously to a wide variety of causes. The Lakes Area Hockey Association is so grateful for this year’s Good Neighbor support of some of the equipment needs of our Phase 3 Capital campaign.

The ice arena was built in 2013 with the plan to complete it in three phases. Because of the momentum generated early in the process, we were able to complete Phases 1 and 2 simultaneously. While the association focused on ice sports, recreation programs and debt service, Phase 3 had to wait for a while, but we are now ready to tackle the remaining construction and amenities. We are currently seeking to raise $1.1 million which includes a $300K matching offer to help us retire debt and complete those projects. This grant helps us move closer to that goal.

The ice arena serves annually nearly 200 local hockey players, ages 4 through adult from Dickinson, Emmett, Clay and Osceola counties and beyond. We hosted 1,000 visiting families from Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Nebraska during the 2018-19 season for games and tournaments which added close to $250K in economic impact in our community.

In addition to hockey action, approximately 5,000 skaters enjoyed weekend open skate and private rentals. The ice arena is a unique and valuable recreation opportunity and is a great enhancement to the Lakes area.

We thank the Good Neighbor Fund and all who support it, and we look forward to seeing you on the ice!
