Spirit Lake-Okoboji earned a 9-0 win over Cherokee to tip off the Lakes Conference girls tennis season Monday.
In singles for SL-O, Casie Barba defeated Courtney Aden (10-0); Izzy Backhaus defeated Isabel Gebers (10-7); Karli Olsen defeated Megan Kellen (10-7); Mackenzie Vos defeated Kalina Shubert (10-4); Elli Hanson defeated Meredith Lovell (10-0); Rayna Petievich defeated Alisanne Struck (10-3).
In doubles, Barba and Backhaus defeated Gebers and Kellen (10-2); Olsen and Hanson defeated Aden and Sara Mesler (10-6); Vos and Grace Eckard defeated Shubert and Lovell (10-5).
Coach Bob O'Hara was pleased with his team's competitiveness.
"Cherokee has improved quite a lot from a year ago," he said. "Our performance was not quite as good as Saturday at the Spencer tournament. We have so many things we need to improve on but the hard part will be finding the time. At the same time, I saw some really [positive] things tonight that showed me that we have some real competitors."
"Both Izzy and Karli battled through tough singles matches and pulled away at the very end," O'Hara continued. "I think that shows what great competitors they are. Sometimes when you're not playing your best it's easier to throw in the towel, but both of them regrouped and won their matches showing some great determination. Casie and Elli both had dominate days in singles, and I also thought that Mackenzie and grace had some good moments in doubles. Rayna Petievich made her varsity singles debut and played well. I'm really impressed with Rayna's progress from a year ago."
