Spirit Lake's Payton Ahrenstorff signs with UNI
Spirit Lake senior Payton Ahrenstorff recently signed her letter of intent to play volleyball for the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. This past season, Ahrenstorff — a libero — picked up 588 digs to become the school's all-time digs leader (1,642). She was named Third Team All-State, First Team All-Lakes Conference and earned a spot on the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Senior All-Star team. Ahrenstorff set the school's single-season record for digs (622) and digs per set (5.98) as a junior, earning First Team All-Lakes Conference honors. Ahrenstorf picked up 432 digs for Spirit Lake as a sophomore and was named Second Team All-Lakes Conference. She played her freshman season at Harris-Lake Park, picking up 257 digs in a career-high 111 sets. She finished her career with 1,899 digs in 416 sets for an average of 4.56 digs per set. The UNI Panthers are coached by Bobbi Petersen, who is in her 19th season at the helm. Under Petersen, the Panthers have posted a 461-141 record, 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, seven Missouri Valley Conference regular season titles, eight MVC tournament titles and two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances.
