Spirit Lake's Mason McCaffery signs with Minnesota State

Spirit Lake senior Mason McCaffery recently signed his letter of intent to compete in track and field and cross country at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minnesota. McCaffery helped lead the Spirit Lake track team to back-to-back Lakes Conference championships each of the past two seasons. He has won five conference titles, including back-to-back wins in the 3,200- and 1,600-meter races in 2017 and 2018. This past season, McCaffery earned runner-up conference finishes in the 800 meters and the high jump. He also helped the Indians' sprint medley team to a seventh-place finish and the 4x800-meter relay team to a 13th-place finish at the 2018 Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships in Des Moines. At the 2017 state meet, McCaffery placed fourth in the 1,600-meter race and helped the 4x800-meter relay team to a third-place finish. He qualified for the state cross country meet as a sophomore.
