Pioneers' season ends with loss to E-Hawks
Okoboji's baseball season came to a close Saturday with a 3-2 loss to Emmetsburg in the first round of the Class 2A district baseball tournament in Lytton.
Coach Rory Marra said his team squandered too many opportunities in the loss.
"It came down to missed opportunities for us," he said. "(We) left 10 guys on base."
The Pioneers surrendered one run in the opening frame, but bounced back with a run of their own in the top half of the second to knot the score.
Emmetsburg scored twice in the fifth and Okoboji pushed one across in the top half of the sixth, but the Pioneers could not take the lead despite drawing eight walks and collecting four hits on the night.
Jacob Allen was 1-4 at the dish with an RBI for Okoboji.
Blake Peter was 1-2 with a double. Cris Halbur was 1-3 with a triple and a run scored. Jay Swygman was 1-3 with an RBI.
David Greiner scored a run and stole a base.
Cris Halbur took the loss on the mound. The junior allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings.
Allen pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk and striking out one E-Hawk batter.
With the loss, the Pioneers finished the season with a 9-18 overall record.
They also say goodbye to their lone senior, Brenden Malchow, who Marra said was instrumental in turning around the Pioneers' season after they got out to a 2-10 start.
"(It was) Brenden Malchow's last game as a Pioneer," he said. "He was really important to us turning our season around at the plate (after) moving him to the No. 2 spot in the order."
