H-LP qualifies for Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships
The Harris-Lake Park High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble has been invited to compete in the 2018 Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships.
This year’s championships will be held at the Staplin Performing Arts Center in West Des Moines on Tuesday, March 27. Harris-Lake Park will perform at 9:40 a.m.
Each year, seven vocal jazz ensembles in each class are chosen through a videotaped audition to participate in the state-wide competition.
This will be Harris-Lake Park's 10th appearance at the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships.
Other Class 1A schools selected are "Groove It or Lose It" from Akron-Westfield, "On That Note" from Central City, "Roarin' Jazz" from Central Lyon, Nodaway Valley Vocal Jazz, South O'Brien Jazz Choir and the 2017 1A champion, Riverside Vocal Jazz.
The first Vocal Jazz competition was held in 2007 and was titled "The Best Of Iowa Jazz Choir Showcase." The name was changed in 2010 to the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships.
The event was to help promote the growth of vocal jazz in Iowa by providing a venue where jazz choirs of all classes could perform representing the best vocal jazz programs in their respective classes. Over the years, schools considering the addition of vocal jazz grew and many districts added programs for students.
In 2017, 32 Ensembles from school districts around the state of Iowa were represented at the Championships. The event continues to grow and recognize the outstanding student musicians and directors in the state who devote their time and talents to vocal jazz.
Judges for the 2018 competition are Dr. Jeremy Fox, Dr. Gloria Cooper and Chad Friesleben.
