Okoboji's regional Iowa Rocks Talent date approaches
Iowa Rock 'n' Roll Music Association and Pearson Lakes Art Center have come together to offer youth in and around the Iowa Great Lake educational opportunities in music.
"Iowa Rocks Talent," a statewide competition for musicians under 21, encourages participation in music outside of school. Opportunities for professional development will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji.
Iowa Rocks Talent has regional competitions in Des Moines, Okoboji, Dubuque and Clear Lake throughout the year. The winners of each regional competition convene Labor Day Weekend at the Roof Garden Ballroom in Arnolds Park to show off their skills to the judges in Iowa Rocks Talent finals. Winners of Iowa Rocks Talent finals receive recording time at Catamount Studios in Cedar Falls and an opportunity to perform at the 2018 Iowa Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame Induction Concert Sept. 2.
"For years, we’ve been producing a Battle of the Bands competition to encourage youth to make their own music, but this year we’re stepping it up a notch or four," Iowa Rock 'n' Roll Music Association Executive Director Cindy Stanbro said. "Music offers youth a voice, and we wanted to give musicians without a support system an opportunity to express themselves and show off their skills. We wanted to get in their backyard."
By holding more competitions across the state, the Iowa Rock 'n' Roll Music Association is hoping more youth will be able to participate.
