Pioneers wrestlers host Tigers, Titans to start season

The Okoboji wrestling team opened its season with a pair of losses at home Thursday night, as the Pioneers fell 56-20 to Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire and 50-21 to Spencer in a double dual.

Okoboji picked up four wins against the Titans.

Heavyweight Garrett Funk pinned Kyle Rehm in 2 minutes, 27 seconds. At 120 pounds, Cain Hansen earned an 11-9 decision over Brock Grimm. Hunter Abrahamson pinned Devon Naig in 4 minutes of their 132-pound bout. And Blake Abrahamson pinned Connor Jensen in 2:48 at 132 pounds.

The Pioneers also earned four wins over Spencer.

Funk earned his second pin of the night, defeating Spencer heavyweight Xander Cheevers in 2:59. Blake Abrahamson pinned Chris Gross in 51 seconds. Matt Anderson pinned Titan Coleman in 4:38. And Jacob Bochman earned an 8-6 win over Spencer 152-pounder TJ Huckfelt.

Okoboji coach Nate Dau was pleased with how his wrestlers competed.

"We wrestled very aggressive tonight and saw some things we need to improve on," he said. "Garrett Funk was one of the highlights of the night with two pins at heavyweight. Garrett has worked hard this past year and has paid his dues. It's exciting to see the work pay off. Cain Hansen had a very exciting match at 120 against GT/RA and pulled out a tough victory."
