Indians end conference slate with win over E-Hawks

Spirit Lake secured a runner-up finish in the Lakes Conference behind champion Le Mars on Thursday with a 15-2 road win over Emmetsburg. The Indians, along with previously ranked Estherville Lincoln Central, finished the conference slate at 8-4, but Spirit Lake swept the Midgets in the season series.

On Thursday, the Indians jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with lone runs in the first and second innings.

In the first, Houston Hawkins connected on a leadoff single to center before scoring on a one-out double by Nick Christensen for the first run of the ball game. After holding Emmetsburg scoreless in the bottom half of the opening stanza, the Indians scored again as Austin Jennings smacked a single into center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Heitritter.

Holding a two-run lead, the Indians were the beneficiaries of poor pitching in the top half of the third, plating six runs to pull ahead 8-0.

Gavin Kramer connected on a lead off single before Christensen and Jac Radcliffe drew back-to-back walks to load them up.

Gavin DeVos was hit bay a pitch to score Kramer. Jennings walked to score Christensen and Reynolds walked to score Radcliffe.

Zach Deitering singled to score DeVos and Jennings before Kramer singled to score Reynolds, making it an 8-0 game.

The E-Hawks only runs of the contest came in the third inning, pulling them within six, but Spirit Lake responded with a seven-run fourth and Reynolds shut the door in the fifth to end the night early.

DeVos earned the win for Spirit Lake. The righty allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk while fanning three in four innings. Reynolds pitched one perfect inning of relief. He struck out one batter.

The Indians scored 15 runs on 10 hits.

Hawkins was 2-4 with a steal, two RBIs and two runs scored. Kramer was 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Christensen was 2-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored. Deitering was 2-2 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Jennings was 1-1 with a steal, an RBI and three runs scored. Reynolds was 1-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Heitritter had an RBI and scored a run for the Indians, who improved to 13-8 overall on the season.
