A gleaming white water tower now stands next to its steel gray predecessor in the city of Wahpeton. The city took bids for the Water Tower Improvement Project in September. Maguire Iron Inc., of Sioux Falls, won the bid, coming in at $928,000. The base bid included improvements, such as the construction of a the new 200,000 gallon water tower, construction of a new 10-inch water main, the demolition of the existing water tower, reconstruction of high service pumps at the water treatment facility and other associated tasks. City council minutes indicated the cost difference between a 150,000 gallon tank and a 200,000 gallon tank was $55,000. The council expressed their preference for work on the project to be completed by June 30, prior to awarding the contract to Maguire Iron.
