A salute to our artistic youth
A Saturday afternoon visit to the Lakes Art Center in Okoboji was truly inspiring. The Dickinson County All-School Show, the most popular event of the year for the Center, displayed art from preschool through high school students in all of Dickinson County.
The "Best in Show" award, understandably, went to a high schooler for a beautiful still life. Their themes were a bit more sophisticated but, to me, the artistry of the grade schoolers and middle schoolers was the big surprise.
Granted, they had the coaching and guidance of the Art Center's after-school art classes, but how grandly the children responded. From portraits to landscapes to abstract works, the colors and expressions were amazing from such young artists.
The exhibit continues until April 22, 2017 and is well worth attending.
In a time of electronic diversions and entertainment, our little piece of Iowa offers so many alternative venues: lakes, parks, trails, summer theatre, Arnolds Park, nature center, YMCA, indoor ice rink, public tennis courts, The Pearson Lakes Art Center and for the sports fan, competitive high school athletic teams and facilities.
I greatly appreciate the opportunities we have to enjoy the diversities available in our community.
