Spirit Lake sweeps E-Hawks on the road
The Spirit Lake girls and boys basketball teams picked up a conference road sweep over Emmetsburg on Thursday.
In the Lakes Conference doubleheader, the Spirit Lake girls topped the E-Hawks 42-33 and the sixth-ranked boys won 61-41.
In the girls contest, Spirit Lake trailed 10-8 after one quarter of play, but outscored the E-Hawks 20-14 in the second quarter to take a 28-24 lead into the break.
Scoring slowed in the second half, but the Indians maintained their advantage, outscoring Emmetsburg 9-4 in the third and playing to a 5-5 tie in the final stanza to hang on for the nine-point victory.
Sophomore Anna Brown was the only Spirit Lake player in double digits on the night. Brown finished with 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Senior Macy Smith had six points and three blocks. Freshman Karli Olsen had five points and a steal. Senior Erin Dau had five points and seven rebounds for the Indians, who improved to 8-7 overall on the year.
In the boys contest, Spirit Lake jumped out to a big lead early before cruising to a 20-point victory.
The Indians led 20-7 after one quarter of play and 32-11 at the half. The score was much closer in the second half of play, as the Indians outscored the E-Hawks 13-12 in the third quarter before Emmetsburg sliced into the deficit with an 18-16 score in the final stanza.
Sophomore Owen Coburn led Spirit Lake with 26 points, five rebounds and two blocks on the night.
Junior Alex Van Dyke had 11 points and five boards. Junior Nick Christensen had seven points and two steals.
Sophomore Mason McCaffery had nine points, six rebounds and two steals. Junior Frankie Ramos had a team-high nine rebounds, and senior JP Walz had a team-high six assists.
With the win, the Indians improved to 11-3 overall on the season.
