Maxine Hix, age 104, of Spirit Lake died on Sunday, July 24 at the Hawkeye Care Center in Spirit Lake. Graveside services were held at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Spirit Lake.

Maxine Mary Speaker, the daughter of Dr. E. E. and Edna (Bates) Speaker, was born on March 16, 1912 in Lake View. She graduated from Lake View High School in 1929 and from Drake University in 1935 with a bachelor's degree in music. After several years teaching in public school, she was united in marriage to Marion Hix on Sept. 12, 1935 in Odebolt. The couple lived on a farm near Odebolt for 40 years before moving to Spirit Lake in 1975.

Maxine taught piano and organ for 35 years and was awarded a Master Teachers Certificate from the Iowa State Music Teachers Association for excellence in student training for state piano competition. She was organist and choir director of the Odebolt Methodist Church for 20 years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the PEO Sisterhood, Mui Phi Epsilon, National Honorary Music Society, Chi Omega Soroity and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Everett Speaker; and a sister, Lucile Williams.

The Schuchert-Lentz Funeral Home is serving the family.
