BOATING OUTING LEADS TO CHARGES

A group of teenagers face charges after police determined the presence of alcohol and "a green plant material" as part of an outing on East Lake Okoboji.

Spirit Lake officers received a complaint regarding several intoxicated males trying to pull their boat out of the water at about 8:52 p.m. Tuesday, June 7. As officers arrived they found five teenagers trying to load a boat onto a boat trailer.

Upon further investigation 19-year-old Grant Potter of Estherville was a arrested for first-offense operating while intoxicated, possession of alcohol under the legal age and possession of marijuana.

Officers also charged 18-year-old Alec Mercer of Spirit Lake with boating while intoxicated, possession of alcohol under the legal age and possession of marijuana.

A pair of 19-year-olds -- Benjamin Parks of Milford and Gage Tolman of Spirit Lake -- plus a 17-year-old male were also charged with possession of alcohol under the legal age.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources assisted officers at the scene. The Spirit Lake Police Department said more charges are expected.
