Indians show well at Humboldt tourney

The Spirit Lake volleyball team kicked off the 2014 season with a 4-1 finish at a tournament hosted by Humboldt on Saturday.

The Indians earned wins over Ogden (2-0), Humboldt (2-1), Emmetsburg (2-0) and West Bend-Mallard (2-0), but fell in a narrow contest to South Central Calhoun (1-2).

Joie Veldman led the way with 25 kills on the day. Macy Smith followed with 22, Lauren Wickham had 21, Kelsey Deperdang had 17 and Carly Ites had 15.

Ites had a team high 13 aces on 28-33 serving. Delperdang was 43-47 with 10 aces, and Bailee Newman was 39-41 with seven ace serves.

Sami Ashlund had a team-high 57 assists, while Kailee Jenness had 39.

Newman recorded a team-high 52 digs, while Delperdang had 31 and Veldman had 24.

Wickham led the Indians with 19 blocks, while Smith and Ites both had 10 on the day.
