"Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God." -- Hebrews 13:16
You may have read in the news about Des Moines businessman Jonnie Wright who gave away nearly $1,000 on Christmas Eve while posing as a homeless man. He stated that it was a "bucket list" thing and he thought it was a great way to give back. He gave away 50 letters to individuals who stopped to help him, and donated all of the money he received to a local emergency shelter.
He encouraged recipients to keep the money, spend it, pay it forward, or whatever that person's heart told them to do. He was quoted as saying, "The message is simple. It is better to give than to receive, and sometimes, it takes a homeless man to remind us what the holiday season is all about."
Many people felt similar to Jonnie Wright and blessed Discovery House residents over Christmas and New Years by sharing what they have and "doing good."
Donors dropped off cards, food, clothing, decorations -- including live and artificial trees, poinsettia, and nativities -- gift bags, gift cards, paper and cleaning products, laundry soap and baskets, and financial gifts. Thank you to everyone who made an effort to write a card or note, or to stop by with your contributions. All of your generous gifts are appreciated by the residents and staff of Discovery House, and are pleasing to God. May God richly bless you in the New Year! Happy 2014!
