Spirit Lake woman knocked off bridge near Waterloo

Icy and windy conditions Tuesday, Dec. 31, led to a frightening moment for a Spirit Lake woman.

Evansdale Police and Fire Department responded to an accident at 12:31 p.m. Dec. 31 along Highway 20 outside of Waterloo. Ellayna Wiedow, 20, of Spirit Lake, was eastbound in Evansdale in Black Hawk County, just east of Waterloo, when she lost control of her car on the Cedar River Bridge. Her car struck a center bridge railing and coming to rest on the inside shoulder of the roadway.

While exiting her vehicle, a second car, driven by Yobel Ande of Cedar Rapids, struck Wiedow's vehicle pushing her over the bridge railing and to the ground 25 feet below.

Paramedics transported Wiedow to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo with non life-threatening injuries.

Conditions were especially icy along Highway 20 in eastern Iowa on New Year's Eve as several other non-injury related accidents occurred in the vicinity.

No charges have been filed at this time and the accident remains under investigation by the Evansdale Police Department.

Evansdale Police were assisted on scene by the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Department and the Iowa State Patrol.
