City election ballot takes shape

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Two mayors and council members in four cities will face contested races on the Nov. 5 ballots in Dickinson County.

Candidates had until 5 p.m. Thursday to turn in the nomination papers needed to appear on the city election ballot. Incumbent mayors in neighboring lakeside communities will face challenges this fall.

Len L. Rettinger III and incumbent Michael D. Mitchell met the filing deadline for the mayor's position in Arnolds Park. City council incumbents Mike Koppert and Mitchell Watters are joined by challengers Rick Reed and Matt Richter for the two available seats on the Arnolds Park City Council.

Incumbent Mary Vander Woude and challenger Leo "Butch" Parks are once again running for the mayor's position in Okoboji. The city's three available city council seats have drawn six candidates. Incumbents Steve Dulin and Jerry Robinson are joined by Julie Mau Andres, Walter Mendenhall, Barry Shaw Sackett and Robert Sandahl.

Milford's three city council seats also drew six candidates. Incumbents Michael Anderson and Christopher David Hinshaw are joined by William Huse, Mery Kay Rolling, Jason D. Simpson and John Walters.

Three incumbents in Orleans -- Eric L. Anderson, Keith Ostrum and Benjamin H. Radcliffe -- are running for three seats. They are joined by Kristine I. Hoss on the ballot.

All 10 mayors in Dickinson County have two-year terms that are set to expire. Cities had either two or three seats to fill in the 2013 election cycle. Candidates needed 10 signatures to appear on the Nov. 5 ballot, except in Spirit Lake. Candidates there needed 25 signatures because the city's population exceeds 3,500 residents.
