Softball: Spirit Lake rides Newman's arm to win
Freshman Bailee Newman tossed a gem of a game to propel Spirit Lake to its second win over a ranked opponent in as many nights.
The Indians built a 3-0 lead over 14th-ranked (Class 2A) Emmetsburg before having to hold on for nail-bitting 3-2 victory after a late error Wednesday, May 29 in Lakes Conference play.
The Indians out-hit Emmetsburg 7-3, but the E-Hawks stranded 11 total runners on base compared to nine for Spirit Lake.
Two walks and two passed balls led to the initial run, as Carly Ites was driven in by Kayla Herrig when she sailed a sacrifice fly to right field in the second inning.
Mackenzie Thate delivered in a big way in the fourth frame, lifting a high solo home run over the left field fence.
Herrig gave the Indians an insurance run they badly needed with an RBI single to right in the bottom of the sixth, as Emmetsburg put two runners on with one out in the top of the seventh. After Newman induced a flyout to center field, a walk loaded the bases. A throwing error plated two runs before Newman forced Hannah Van Oosbree to ground out to shortstop Paige Krause.
Newman tossed a gem of a game, allowing no earned runs off three hits in seven innings of work. She walked eight and struck out five.
Alissa Christoffer was 2-for-3 and Herrig came up clutch with two hits and two RBI. Thate also drove in a run off her solo deep fly.
