Wrestling: Okoboji matmen third at Siouxland tourney
Okoboji finished with three runner-up performers and total 11 place winners on the way to a third place team finish at the Siouxland Conference wrestling tournament Friday, Jan. 25 in Sioux Center.
The Pioneers moved up one spot to third place in the placing round with 147 points, but they couldn't totally close the gap on runner-up Sibley-Ocheyedan who finished with 159 points. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley ran away with the team title by 81 points after nine of their 14 place winners reached the finals.
"We looked like a different team (than the one that wrestled Spirit Lake Park on Thursday)," said Okoboji coach Nate Dau. "We wrestled extremely well as a team and had five or six upsets over higher seeded wrestlers throughout the tournament. We are right on track for sectionals and need to have a good week of practice."
Brady Jones (106), Kaleb Vanderpool (126) and Taylor Cody (145) all earned second place finishes.
"Taylor Cody, Kaleb Vanderpool and Brady Jones wrestled extremely well and were conference runners-up," said Dau. "Ryan Clark ended up with a fourth place finish when giving up 20 pounds at 160."
Jones (16-11) pinned Treyton Virtue of Central Lyon/George-Little Rock in 55 seconds, then lost an 11-1 major decision to BH/RV's Sam Klarenbeek.
Cody (26-12) pinned MOC-Floyd Valley's Diego De Lira in 3-minutes, 16-seconds, then won a 12-4 major decision over Seth Hoogendoorn of BH/RV, his second in three tries against Hoogendoorn. Tyler Reck caught Cody in a spladle in the 145-pound championship match, pinning him in 2:33.
Vanderpool (20-8) pinned Joshua Dahl of MOC-FV in 1:33 and Alex Hash of BH/RV in 1:18, setting up a match-up with ninth-ranked (Class 1A) Colby McIntire of GLR/CL. Vanderpool was pinned in 1:34 in the title round.
Placing third overall were Ryan Bolster (120), Noah Bouse (132), Jordan Hanna (152) and Justin Richardson (182). Jon Mitchell (138) and Ryan Clark (160) were also impressive while wrestling to fourth place finishes.
The final two place winners for Okoboji were Brandon Marzano with a fifth place finish at heavyweight and Jacob Sauter with a sixth place showing at 195-pounds.
Bolster, Bouse, Hanna and Richardson all made impressive runs through the consolation bracket.
Bolster (13-17) overcame a pin by BH/RV's Maxwell Klarenbeek in the championship bracket with back-to-back wins. He won a 4-3 decision over CL/GLR's Tanner Robertson and defeated Ty Steenhoven of Sioux Center 8-6 to earn third place.
Bouse (23-16) lost a tough 10-7 decision to West Lyon's Zack Sauers in the semifinals after pinning Jesse Espinoza of S-O in 2:54 in the quarterfinals. Bouse secured an 8-3 win over Josh Olvera of SC and a 4-2 victory over Sheldon/South O'Brien's Dustin Freeman in an ultimate tiebreaker to cap off the meet on a high note.
Hanna (22-12) won a 3-1 decision over Brian Klein of Sheldon/SOS and pinned S-O's Tyler O'Connor to finish third overall.
Richardson (25-10) went 1-1 with a pin in the championship bracket. After losing by fall to Dylan Brockshus, Richardson responded with a 11-9 sudden victory over Sioux Center's Derek Hooyer. In a battle for third place, Richardson pinned Cody Doherty of West Lyon in 22 seconds.
The Pioneers next wrestle in Rock Rapids this upcoming Saturday at the Class 1A sectional tournament starting at noon.
