Boys golf: Hanson, Hummel earn medals in SL's season debut

Seniors Tate Hanson and Scott Hummel battled it out for meet medalist honors to propel Spirit Lake to an impressive 152 to 213 dual victory over North Union to open up the 2012 boys golf season April 2 at Brooks National Golf Club.

Hanson forced a playoff with Hummel after burdying the par-4 ninth hole. Both players recorded a birdie, six pars and two bogeys in their first round of the season, but Hanson won the top medal on a one hole playoff. They each carded rounds of 37.

Corey Potter was the third scorer with a 38. He couldn't overcome a double bogey on the par-3 fifth after registering eight pars.

Zach Skopec and Matt Heaton tied for fourth overall with 40s. Heaton came away with a birdie on the par-5 sixth just like Hummel did.

Trevor Caldwell turned in a 44 to complete the varsity squad.

The Indians won the JV dual 183 to 238. Ryley Smith was the top scorer with a 44, followed by Nick Wetzeler and Adam Dau with rounds of 46. Tark Thomas shot a 47, Taylor Christensen fired a 48 and Casey Elbert finished with a 52.

The Indians return to the golf course Thursday, April 12 with a Lakes Conference triangular against Western Christian and Cherokee.
