Okoboji capped off a remarkable Siouxland Conference season on the wrestling mat with a so-so performance with the league's dual title on the line, finishing with a 41-28 victory over MOC-Floyd Valley before getting handed a punishing 61-12 loss by Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Thursday, Jan. 19 in Rock Valley.

The Nighthawks edged MOC-Floyd Valley 51-24 to secure the outright Siouxland crown for the second straight season. BH/RV (18-3) finishes with an unblemished 7-0 conference record, while Okoboji (9-6) went 6-1 in the Siouxland this season.

"From the outside looking in we did place second in the Siouxland Conference. Our kids, school and community should be proud of the way our kids wrestled and conducted themselves so far this season," said Okoboji coach Nate Dau. "We have some great kids here and as coaches we are extremely proud of the way they have wrestled this season. Wrestlers are some of the hardest working and most dedicated athletes around. With that being said, it hurts just a little bit more when we lose."

The Pioneers went 5-6 overall in contested matches against MOC-Floyd Valley, but took advantage of a Dutch lineup that was without 2011 state place winner Collin Ascherl at 160 pounds and Drew Rupp at 195. Ryan Bolster (106), Kaleb Vanderpool (120) and Zach Jones (160) all capitalized on open weight classes with forfeit wins.

Cody Louscher (152), Justin Richardson (170), Tanner Taylor (182), Jacob Sauter (220) and Blake Manwarren (285) each came away with victories.

Four of the five wrestlers scored bonus points for the Pioneers. Richardson won a 14-4 major decision, Taylor came away with a first-period pin, Sauter secured a second-period fall and Manwarren pulled out a 12-4 major decision. Louscher also clipped Josh Wilson, 10-7.

Jones, Taylor and Manwarren were the only Pioneer wrestlers to finish 2-0, as BH/RV won 11 of 14 matches versus Okoboji in the nightcap. The Nighthawks secured eight pins, to go along with two major decisions and a technical fall.

Jones improved to 28-2 this season with a pin in 3:01 over Waylon Rau, while Taylor needed all six minutes to clip Ty Koldenhoven 10-5. Manwarren also held on for an 11-5 decision over Gregory Palma at heavyweight.

"We did enough against MOC to win. They have some very tough kids and are very well coached. I know they have been plagued by the injury bug and were not at full strength," said Dau. "Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley is a very solid team and once they got momentum going in their favor they never slowed down."

The Pioneers wrap up the regular season this week with a trip to Spirit Lake Park Thursday and the Siouxland Conference Tournament Friday in Sioux Center.

"We need to have a very focused and intense couple of practices early next week to get ready for Spirit Lake and the (Siouxland) Conference Tournament," said Dau.
