Harper F. Seemann

Harper F. Seemann, age 90, of Spirit Lake, passed away Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, at Hilltop Care Center. He was born on October 29, 1921, in Spirit Lake, to Eldon and Gladys (McDowell) Seemann.
Harper worked for a local newspaper growing up in Spirit Lake. He graduated from Spirit Lake High School in 1939, and enlisted to serve his country in the United States Navy, serving for three years on the USS Henry T Allen.
Harper was united in marriage to Betty VanderBurg on Nov. 28, 1946. He worked for Berkley and Company in Spirit Lake, retiring at the age of 59. For 27 years, Harper and Betty enjoyed spending their winters in Fort Myers, Fla. He also enjoyed talking with people, gardening and needle point. Harper was a Boy Scout leader for 20 years and taught Sunday School for 20 years.
Harper is survived by his wife, Betty Seemann of Spirit Lake; four sons, Bill Seemann, and his wife, Heike, of Sioux City, Ken Seemann, and his wife, Julie, of Oskaloosa, Clayton Seemann, and his wife, Linda, of Spirit Lake, and Skip Seemann, and his wife, Brenda, of Spirit Lake; grandchildren, Lauren (David), Chris, Ernie (BJ), Alex (Augustina), Briana (Jake), Calayna (Ryan), Rolland, Aishya, Kaden, Nicole (Mitch), Holly, Andrew, Scott (Amira) and Daniel; three great-grandchildren; and close family friend, Shirley Kleene. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen; and twin daughters, Denise and Diane.
A funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 12, at the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake. Visitation was Sunday at the Schuchert Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Harper Seemann Scholarship Fund.
