The 2011 Harris-Lake Park volleyball team (front, from left): Miranda Brueggeman, Leah Duitsman and Mariah Gath, (back): Grace Winters, Megan Garms, Noreen Morrow, Sarah Kruger and Macy Gunderson. The Wolves are coached by Daryl Meyer and Travis Popken.

Q&A with Coach Meyer

1. What are the main differences between this year's team and last year's team?

"Five of our six starters have one year of playing experience so that will be nice to have back, but we're still inexperienced because four of six starters are just sophomores. It's still a very young squad."

2. Where do your strengths lie this year?

"I think having our middles back for a second year is going to be a big plus. Leah (Duitsman), our senior, has been leading us well by coming in a lot this summer with our lifting program. I think we'll be able to attack efficiently with two different kinds of hitters. Noreen (Morrow), at 6-foot-1, is really hitting the ball well and Miranda (Brueggeman) with her agility and speed is just a different type of hitter. Watching her get to tough balls at the net is very fun. Macy (Gunderson) is small in stature but she has a huge heart. She improves a lot of balls she puts up. A year of setting is under her (belt) and sometimes that can be an overwhelming task. I don't think anybody would not want to have those five kids and they bring all the experience that we have for this year. And the best thing is that only one is a senior, so we like the position we're in right now. It's just about developing a couple more players now."

3. Where do you see the team needing to improve?

"Our athleticism is going to be a plus for us and our team chemistry is going to be a plus, but we have to figure out how to replace our serve receive corps and switching three starters from half rotation to full rotation, so we'll see how that goes. We have a group of girls that don't like to lose and the first week of practice has went pretty well. Defensive wise we're picking up our passing positions really well, it's just with us being a young team and seeing how we react when other teams come at us live."

4. Who are your key returning players?

6. Size up your conference this year.

"NSKAR, WB-M, CC-E and Ventura will be the teams to look out for in the conference. NSKAR with the tradition that never seems to go away and the other three return a lot of younger players with All-Conference recognition from last year. It going to lead to great battles in the Cornbelt this year. Hopefully we can push every night to compete with them all."
