Helping P.I.E

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

It's that time of year again ... school is starting and with that, will soon come those little knocks on your door from school children who are helping to raise money for their schools.

Here at Spirit Lake Middle and Elementary schools, we have two main fundraisers; the middle school's magazine sales fundraiser that will run Sept. 2-16, and the elementary school's Innisbrook (wrapping paper and gifts) fundraiser that will run Sept. 16-30.

Both fundraisers are managed and run by the respective P.I.E. (Partners in Education) groups in each school. Because our fundraisers wouldn't be successful without the support of our community members, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in our community for their past support. Because of your support we have been able to provide our students and our schools with educational opportunities and school enhancements that would otherwise not be possible.

With the money we raised last year, we were able to send middle school students on the following field trips: 8th graders to Camp Foster, 7th graders to Lakeside Lab, 6th graders to the Science Museum of Minnesota, and the 5th graders to Des Moines. We were also able to fund the on-line Accelerated Reader Program, Model Rockets for 7th grade science, the 8th grade Cannon Assembly, Owl Pellets for 5th grade science, calculators for special education students, football pants for the Middle School football team, cross country skis and poles for P.E., 8th grade Roll of Thunder books, 7th grade water testing kit for their Lakeside Lab unit, a computer camera for the media center, recess equipment, music supplies, and art supplies, along with trips for the 7th and 8th graders for bowling and the 5th and 6th graders to Skateland. In the elementary school we were able to fund field trips to the Sioux Falls Zoo, Washington Pavilion, Lewis and Clark Museum, and the Pumpkin Patch.

We were also able to fund swim lessons for 3rd graders, human body models, political US/world desk maps, State Award books for the media center, guided reading books for Reading Recovery, iPod players and headphones for the kindergarten rooms, new furniture for the school library, along with funding for teacher training and equipment for the new "SMART" room.

So, when you hear that little knock on your door asking for you to support our school fundraisers, please know that your money is well spent on educational enhancements for our schools and educational opportunities for our kids!

Thank you in advance for supporting our students and schools again this year! We greatly appreciate it! We couldn't do it without you!
