UNC's Brown will play in WBI

The Northern Colorado women's basketball team found out that they earned a berth in the Women's Basketball Invitational on March 14. The sixth-seeded Bears will take on third-seeded Cal State Bakersfield tonight.

This is the second year of the WBI, with Appalachian State winning the title a year ago.

Spirit Lake native Kaisha Brown was one of three players to start all 30 games for UNC this season.


Sieperda captures three Midwestern Championships

Taylor Sieperda, the daughter of Matt and Stacy Sieperda, competed in the ages 13 and over Midwestern Championships on March 11th-13th on the campus of the University of Nebraska Omaha.

Sieperda impressively captured race titles in the 50 freestyle, the 100 freestyle, and the 100 backstroke, while placing fourth in the 100 flystroke, fifth in the 200 backstroke and seventh in the 200 freestyle.


Gerking to play in Defender Gold Club All-Star game

The Dordt College Defender Gold Club has finalized the participants for the annual Defender Gold Club/Pizza Ranch High School All-Star basketball games to be played Saturday, March 19 at the De Witt Gym on Dordt's campus.

The game features seniors from the Lakes, Siouxland and War Eagle Conferences and has been happening annually since 1996. Alli Gerking of Spirit Lake joins fellow Lakes representatives Emily Anderson and Erica Westhoff of Le Mars and Kayla Gesink of Western Christian.

The girls contest will get underway at 5:30 p.m. while the boys game will start at approximately 7:15. There will be a three-point shooting contest at halftime of each game. Admission for the evening will be $6 for adults and $3 for high school students and younger. Teams will be coached by area Pizza Ranch restaurant managers.


INA announces 2011 All-State selections for boys basketball

The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2011 All-State Boys Basketball teams for Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A Tuesday, naming Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Jarrod Uthoff as Mr. Basketball.

At 6-foot-8, Uthoff helped Jefferson to the Class 4A state tournament for a second straight year, leading the state with a 26.2 scoring average despite facing constant double and triple teams defensively. He also averaged 11.2 rebounds, shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 84.6 from the free-throw line. Uthoff, who will play college basketball at the University of Wisconsin, transferred to Jefferson his sophomore year from an Iowa Valley High School.

After leading Storm Lake St. Mary's to a Class 1A state championship, sophomores Kennedy Drey and Luke Lenhart were named first and third team selections, respectively. Boyden-Hull's Brandt Van Roekel was also a third team pick.

Tyler Wolterstorff of state runner-up Western Christian was a first team honoree in 2A, while West Lyon's Beau Hassebroek, Emmetsburg's Nick Wuebker and Sioux Center's Rees Beaver were all third team award winners.

3A state champion Bishop Heelan had two first team selections in Alex Malloy and Wesley Staten. They were joined by MOC-Floyd Valley's Daniel Jansen on the first team. Le Mars' duo of Austin Homan (second team) and Paxton Strub (third team) also earned nods by the INA.
