Indians ride pin parade to home dual sweep
On a night when Spirit Lake Park proved to be far superior to its competitors, it was the little things that mattered most Dec. 9 in a Lakes Conference dual.
The Indians were met with little resistance by a couple of lower tier teams, sweeping Western Christian (63-18) and Estherville Lincoln Central (60-20) by wide margins. SLP needed less than 30 minutes to dispose of the Wolfpack, before having two matches go the distance in a rout of the much improved Midgets.
"In the first dual we knew with their numbers being down, that it was not as much about the team score as just getting some matches in. And they (Western) had a whole lot more guys than they've had in the past, but the big part is going through a dual like that and being dominant and then coming to Estherville and following it up," said SLP coach Rick VanderWoude. "I knew Estherville was improved and thought the kids showed up with the same intensity against a good team and did very well to win two in a row."
Doug Miner (103), Zach Skopec (122), David Trucksess (125), Isaac Lundgren (130), Dylan Bryce (135), Mark Norland (140), Jacob Welch (145), Rick Maris (152) and Brady Mart (189) all went 2-0 for the Indians. Miner, Skopec and Miner all improved to 6-0 while Norland boosted his record to 7-0 on the young season.
Welch, the lone SLP senior, shined the brightest with two falls on Senior Night. He threw Jacob Johnson of Western Christian in 23 seconds and finished off Aaron Howing of ELC via fall with 45 seconds left in the match.
"That was a perfect setup for Welch. It was honestly the best he's wrestled to this point in the season," said VanderWoude. "For him to be the only senior, it was nice to see it all come together and see him back it up on Senior Night with two impressive matches."
Eight other SLP wrestlers recorded pins in the dual, with a season-high eight pins in a win over the Midgets and four falls and six forfeits versus the Wolfpack. Only four WC and five ELC grapplers scored offensive points in the dual.
"I guess that's good and bad," VanderWoude said. "In a situation like that, you want everyone to feed off each other, which is what basically happened."
