SL, Okoboji girls finish 1-2 at S-O Invite

The Spirit Lake and Okoboji girls golf teams proved to be in a class of their own, finishing as the only two squads to shoot in the 180s on the way to securing the top two spots at the Sibley-Ocheyedan Invitational Tuesday, May 4 at the Sibley Golf & Country Club.

The Indians were challenged all the way to the clubhouse by the Pioneers, but their depth eventually came to the forefront, using three top 10 performers to win the tournament title by five shots with a 181. Okoboji finished second with a 186 and lowered its season-best score by seven strokes, while Le Mars was third with a 195. Cherokee (201) and George-Little Rock (212) rounded out the top five.

Pioneer sophomore Kiley Wermersen turned in her top round of the season, shooting a three-over-par round of 39 to run away with the individual title by three strokes.

Hannah Jones also placed seventh overall for Okoboji with a 46. Kaylee Schmeling chipped in a 50, followed by Kristina Kaiser with a 51.

Rounding out the Okoboji varsity team was Halee Morrow with a 58 and Samie Staines with a 61.

Maureen Owens of SL carded a third place score of 43. Ashley Nielsen also ended up in fourth with a 44 while Regan Sieperda placed ninth overall with a 47.

Anna Hoss carded a 47 and was the fourth Spirit Lake varsity scorer. Non-counting scorers were Leah Hilpipre with a 48 and Mikaela Weeks with a 55.
