Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 26, at St. John's Lutheran Church in May City for Marlene Rae (Dahlman) Schultz, 72, of Hartley.

Marlene passed away Feb. 22, 2010, while a patient at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Interment was at Baker Township Cemetery in Melvin. The Rev. Paul Johnson officiated.

Marlene Rae (Dahlman) Schultz, the daughter of Clarence and Laura (Rubsam) Dahlman, was born on January 10, 1938, in rural Osceola County, Iowa. She spent her childhood years in the Melvin area and graduated from Melvin Community School in 1955.

On October 19, 1957, she was united in marriage to Delbert Schultz at St. John's Lutheran Church in May City. She worked as a secretary for the Melvin School for two years. After Delbert returned from serving in the military, they began farming -- first near Melvin for 12 years and then on a farm by May City where they spent the next 39 years. During this time, Marlene worked at Gene's Foodland in Hartley for three years and at Exopack in Sibley for about 16 years. Delbert passed away suddenly on April 21, 2009. Later that year, Marlene moved into a condo in Hartley. She was diagnosed with uterine sarcoma in early February of 2010.

Marlene enjoyed eating out, dancing, having coffee with friends, quilting, and traveling. Her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren. She loved to be with them and attended many of their school events. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Fellowship Club, and the Legion Auxiliary in Melvin.

Survivors include her three daughters and their families: Denise and Loran Anderson and son Reed of May City, DeAnn Schultz of Creston, and Brenda Schultz and daughters Nicole and April of Fostoria; her mother, Laura Dahlman of Hartley, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father Clarence Dahlman, her husband Delbert, and her sister Cheryl Thiele.
