Services were held Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake for Lester Leonard Meyer, 94, of Spirit Lake.
Lester passed away February 22, 2010, at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake. Interment was at Memorial Gardens of Spirit Lake. The Rev. Lon Lewis officiated.
Lester Leonard Meyer was born Jan. 7, 1916, in Raymond, S.D., the son of Frank and Thekla (Peterson) Meyer. After graduating from Raymond High School, Lester served in the United States Army during WWII.
On September 13, 1940, Lester was united in marriage to Blanche Goering in Sibley.
He worked as a tool and die worker at Berkleys for 25 years.
Lester's favorite thing to do was fish. He enjoyed salmon fishing in Washington State, ocean fishing, trout fishing and fishing in the Iowa Great Lakes. Lester and Blanche also drove to Alaska so Lester could fish. Lester and Blanche enjoyed traveling wherever campers would take them. Sometimes, Lester would catch the fish and Blanche would can them in the camper while they were on vacation.
He has nine fish mounted that were about 10 pounds each. He also had about a hundred fishing poles, one being of the original poles that Berkley's produced.
He is survived by his three nieces, Joyce Miller of Johnston, Angela Leusink of Des Moines and Melissa Goering of Independence, Mo; one great-nephew, Ben Leusink and two great-nieces, Alyson Leusink and Gabriel Goering.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche; parents, Frank and Thekla Meyer and one bother, Marvin Meyer.
Pallbearers were Dale Kilts, Don Johnson, John Leusink, Dale Garnjobst, Rollie Peschon and Harlan Christensen. Honorary bearers were Verne Buchman and Rocky Duhn.
