Honoring Veterans

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

A school assignment was to write a tribute for Veteran's Day. This was written by Rachel Petrik of Ft. Myers, Fla. She is the 15-year-old granddaughter of Rocky and Evonne Duhn of Spirit Lake.

Those Who Fill Our Hearts and Souls

We are from the sacrifices of our troops, small and large

from the determined fight for freedom.

We are from 50 shining stars and gleaming red and white stripes of honor,

from army boots and uniforms of camouflage.

We are from "I Pledge Allegiance to the Flag,"

from "Left-right-left."

We are from time spent overseas,

from years on foreign soil.

We are from the warm hearts of our veterans,

from firecrackers on the Fourth of July.

We are from our soldiers, who proudly wear the American flag on their broad shoulders

in the face of danger.

We are from our soldiers, who put their lives on the line and only ask that we use the

right they fought for in return.

We are from our soldiers, who fight for strangers they will never meet.

And that is why we, the people of the United States of America, are from the pride and

patriotism of our soldiers.
